Discuss the factors that led a small jewish set to break from its parent faith and become the world religion?
that is cChristianity. Hi I have a 2000 word essay to do on this topic i was going to talk about circucision , the sadduccees and pharisees , and the influence of pauls writing but i find i cant get a lot of information on this, also would you have any other ideas, suggestions and recommendations on how to approach this essay thanks
Christianity is a replacement theology, not the parent of Judaism. It has much more in common with the beliefs of the Greeks and Romans, & like the current "messianic" movement, an attempt to obliterate the eternal covenant and remove any self-determination of the Jewish people. Understanding the basic beliefs of the two religions and seeing them in light of secular history is essential to study to see this clearly.
Your question is a bit loaded if one is not familiar with either history and the extreme difference in the core beliefs and concepts of the two religions, Judaism and Christianity. The many different messiah hopefuls who lived over the hundreds of years of Greek and Roman occupation of Judea and the Gallilee had "followers" who looked to them for leadership and fulfillment of messianic expectation, and they were indeed Jews. Those who created doctrine that changed the definition of messiah to make a messiah an object of worship and to rely on his sacrifice as atonement for sin, and changed his “kingdom” from an earthly rule to a spiritual control, were not.
Jews did not and do not believe that the concept of a Davidic messiah has a thing to do with believing that he's a deity in human form or human sacrifice or deicide or anything else to do with pardon of sin or atonement. Those concepts are directly forbidden for the Jewish people by commandments in the Torah.
The first to follow the New Testament doctrine would have been apostate Hellenized Jews and Romans..the doctrine is not Judaism. The Christian concept of "Messiah" in the New Testament is not a notion that supports Judaism, but a concept of assimilated Jews and Roman beliefs that is a clear attempt to negate Judaism. By negating the concept of self-determination through the laws of the Jewish people, the Romans wished to assimilate the Jews into their empire as so many other nation peoples had been assimilated before and after.
Christianity borrowed words, phrases, and many of the stories of the ancient Hebrews, but reassigned to them meanings that are MUCH closer to the Romanized and Hellenized concepts of Roman occupied Judea.
Belief in a savior man/god whose blood and death atoned for the sinful nature of his people was common to many in the Levant. Original sin ( born with a burden of sin ) is foreign to Torah and Judaism.
A study of Plato's Republic, particularly the portion called "The Myth of Er" gives a near verbatim depiction of the Christian concept of hell (that is not found in Tanakh) more than 200 years before the time Jesus is said to have lived.
Tammuz and Mithras were also sacrificed savior deities who had followers of apostate Jews in the North (Galilee) and areas of Paul's travels. Tammuz and the Romanized version of the Zoroastrian Mithras were both born of virgins (a concept having nothing to do with the Davidic Messiah or Tanakh) and their death was said to have brought their people reconciliation to their sinful natures. Tammuz was said to die and be reborn each spring. Tammuz worship was so widespread and it was condemned in Tanakh in the book of Ezekiel. There is still even a Hebrew month named for this pagan man/god despite such Jewish condemnation of his worship. Sir James Frazier's work The Golden Bough is useful to learning about the concept of Savior Kings that was not only widespread in the Middle east but in Europe and helped to aid the rapid spread of Christianity. Noted Oxford scholar and award winning Historian Richard Fletcher's The Barbarian Conversion: From Paganism to Christianity also helps one to understand the development of many beliefs and rituals found in modern Christianity.
At best, Christianity is a little less than 1/3 based on Jewish precept, but primarily a mixture of the beliefs of the polytheistic peoples in and round Judea and the Galilee of the first century. Only Judaism had strict prohibitions of altering or adding to the Torah or the concept of God and the path of the eternal covenant of Israel.
Ancient conquered peoples and polythestic nations were somewhat "used" to their political leaders telling them what gods were to be venerated during their rule and which deity their ruler was representative of in human form. Adding a new deity or giving a new name to an ancient deity whose belief was already established was not that big a deal for most of the Gentile population. Tanakh recorded that any time such a practice of a Jewish king telling the Jews that they were to worship a foreign deity...the entire Jewish people suffered..and often at the very hands of the people whose deity they had left God to serve.
Every aspect of Jewish belief is given a new spin in the New Testament doctrine. Things that I once thought must have been fabricated outright I later discovered were beliefs of the ancient Greeks and Romans. This was the longstanding battle for souls going on..the Hellenized Jews, those who had become apostate to Judaism, desired to entice other Jews to worship as the Greeks that they believed superior in philosophy and knowledge, so they created texts that tried to say..see this is what it was supposed to have been all along. However, reality was that those beliefs were identical to the beliefs and practices that the Torah forbids to the Jewish people to keep them separate as a covenant nation dedicated to God alone.
Once one begins an in-depth study of the religious practices and beliefs of all the peoples surrounding the Jews in the centuries just preceding the beginning of Christianity, one can see these developments take place. It was a concerted effort to do away with Israel and Judaism.
The followers of Jesuswho believed that he could even be reincarnated and return to do the job were still within Jewish belief, but once doctrine that took on elements of man/god worship and other Hellenized belief, they became a separate religion..and their Roman rulers recognized this.
The emperor Nerva (96‑98 C.E.) freed the Christians from paying the fiscus judaicus, the Jewish capitation tax decreed as a punishment in the aftermath of the revolt of 66‑73 C.E.
Clearly, the Romans now regarded the Christians as a separate group.
Emperor Hadrian later attempted to wipe out Judaism after they revolted against the previous Emperor, Trajan. He built a Roman temple to Jupiter on top of the ruins of the old Jewish temple in Jerusalem, which had been destroyed in 70 CE, and is said to have burnt the Torah on top of the Temple Mount in 135 CE .
He then renamed Judea, Palestina, a Latinized version of the name of the Philistines, to insult the Jews and eliminate the history of Jewish presence.
The early followers of Jesus who had been awaiting his reincarnation again separated themselves publicly from the Jews around the time of the 2nd revolt, and refued to ally themselves with the Jews and allied themselves to the Romans, this led to another messiah hopeful, Simeon Bar Kochba to view them as the enemies of Israel, thus, after the defeat of the Jews and the murder of Bar Kochba, the Chistians were not expelled along with the Jews.
After Constantine - First Christian Emperor of Rome (285-337 CE) the Roman empire was Christian.
So..the first Christians in the sense of ..the first to follow the doctrine that we see today in the New Testament ( either the Vulgate OR the KJV) would not have been following Judaism at all.
Hellenized Jews, already apostate to the Jewish religion would have been very predisposed to those concepts. Believing Jews on the other hand, have never been so disposed.
Hope this has helped your understanding.
