How are currencies set to equal to each other?
Do currencies from other countries depend on the external national debt, GDP, GDP per capita, or what? What benefit would one country get for having a different currency? Why is it that Mexico, a developing country, has it's pesos worth at 12 pesos per dollar, but Japan, being a first world country and a far more powerful economy has its currency at about 98 yen per dollar?
I THINK most float. Supply & demand sets the price. Kinda like stocks. The government can control the supply, by printing more. Some countries work hard to keep theirs pegged to the dollar--e.g. Argentina keeps their peso at 3 to $1 USD.
China usually keeps their Ren Men Bee pegged at 8 to $1 USD, but I think their method of control is a bit more...authoritarian. China was pegged tight to the dollar until July '05, then they let it float and its been getting stronger against the dollar ever since, making Chinese imports more expensive to us. Theoretically this should help US manufacturers sell to the (huge) Chinese market and create more jobs here, but we're losing a lot of jobs this year--a quarter million just in October.
Interestingly, I think Liberia actually uses US dollars instead of having their own currency.
As you note, Japan's Yen is about a penny. That by itself doesn't mean much. Sometimes (usually after hyperinflation devalues their currency) a country will readjust by printing up "new" bills that are worth many times the "old" one. Japan simply leaves theirs where it is. Kinda like Warren Buffet never splits Berkshire Hathaway stock, so now its over $100,000.00 per share.
I hope somebody better informed than me gives a better answer--It could be very interesting, or deathly boring.
