Are latin america spanish and spain spanish very different?
If I learn the Latin America version can I still comunicate efficantly in Spain?
No they aren't.
They are ALL speaking Spanish, and they understand the same terms, but will CHOOSE certain words over others. For instance, in Spain conduzco un coche, but in Mexico, manejo un carro. Same sentence, same meaning, they understand, but wouldn't naturally choose the other terms. Just as in Britain, I look under the bonnet of my car to see if the windscreen cleaner is full, but in the US, I look under the hood to check the windshield washer fluid. Did you understand the one from the other country?
Kay, the other major difference is that there are two grammatical issues, which, again, are understood. In Spain, they use vosotros, they don't in most of Latin America, though there is VOS in a couple of countries, which substitutes for tú in others, and comes from the vosotros form of the verb. And then there is the difference in the pronouns for direct and indirect objects. Again, simple differences that are understood.
This whole thing about the difference in the "languages" comes from Rosetta Stone trying to sell more products. See, if they convince you that there are two different Spanish languages, more people are likely to buy two sets of their discs than if they realize that there is only one language with a couple of differences.
Wonder why they haven't come up with three or four different courses for French or German? Cause, you know in Switzerland, and Austria they speak an entirely different and uncomprehensible version of German from the people in Germany. And people from Paris couldn't POSSIBLY understand the people from Senegal, or Québec.
No matter where you go, you are going to find linguistic differences. When you hear someone from another part of your country speak, don't you hear a different accent? Do you think that English language learners should buy a special set of courses if they are going to live in Texas, as opposed to New York? or London? Or do you think they will just adapt when they move to wherever?
The more I see of Rosetta Stone, the less respect I have for the program or the people who created it.
